We are Pruning!!

ImageHello Friends,

Happy Fall Equinox!  There is a wonderful teaching from the book of Ecclesiastes about paying attention to the seasons: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…”

It reminds us that for every project there is a natural cycle. If you work with the rhythm of the seasons, the result will be much more productive than if you work against it. Planting a seed is the first step in a plant’s life cycle. That process continues with the sprouting of the seed, followed by its growth and eventual flowering.

Seven years ago, I planted some fruit trees in the garden of my California home. Based upon the first couple years of their lives, I honestly had no idea how luscious and fertile these plants would become. They are now mature, and include citrus, banana, peach and fig trees. Not only have they grown, and given much fruit, but they need to be pruned regularly to give them a chance at a long and healthy life.

Almost two years ago a new place was planted in Manhattan, and we called it Sanctuary NYC. What an amazing ride it has been! We have supported many people at our Sunday spiritual gatherings, hosted salons and classes and special events such as a winter documentary film series, a new play reading series, and a rare appearance by the 12 Indigenous Grandmothers and Mayan elders from Guatemala. We have created beautiful music during our weekly services and presented a choir concert that was professional in every element.

As we prepare to celebrate our second anniversary, the time for some shaping and pruning is at hand. What is our plant trying to be? We are excited about our two year anniversary celebration, to be held on the exact anniversary of our founding onWednesday Oct 23 at a gallery in Harlem. On that date, we will be treated to artistic expressions from across disciplines, as we enjoy each other’s company and take in the amazing power of our anniversary day.

The DNA of Sanctuary NYC lies at the core of the flourishing plant of the artistic and spiritual community we have cultivated over the past two years. Our anniversary event will represent that essence and we hope to see you all there.

Meanwhile, please join us this Sunday for a service led by Reverend Karen Osit.

It’s a new season!

Happy fall.
Peace/out,
Rev. Jane

Subtle Shifts and Big Changes

ImageHello out there!

So, this may come in the category of re-stating the obvious, but most change does not happen on the outside. It happens inside hearts and minds, and hopefully with intention, rather than as a result of inner chaos or submerged cellular race memory from the cave people. Ernest Holmes said, “what mind can conceive YOU can achieve.” Well what he actually said is, “What MIND can conceive MAN can achieve,” but we realize that needs to be more inclusive. Right?

Even that shift in wording and consciousness is the result of many years of many people making difficult choices to bring forth challenging truths. Women hold up half the sky. Love that.

We are in the midst of a major shift in world consciousness. What has been a difficult moment, and near aggressive act of the U.S. on Syria has been averted in favor of diplomacy. This is a major shift. It is HUGE. It is the result of many actions and transformations. It is also the result of a smart move by the President to put the conversation into the lap of the people’s representatives.

It is so easy to not notice things like this. Our nervous systems are amped up on caffeine and Fox news to react to CRISIS! But we need to become people who can discern more subtle shifts. It is in the subtle shifts that the major changes happen, one step at a time. Stay in prayer. See peace. It is possible in our lifetimes.

Sunday we will be treated to a solo dance piece by Ramon, an amazing man who has been a Principle dancer with major ballet companies. The piece is by the legendary choreographer Lulu Washington and the music by Phillip Glass. Please do not miss this if you are anywhere in the vicinity of 86th and Amsterdam at 2 pm.

We love to see your face.

Peace in,

Rev. Jane

Pray Without Ceasing

Dear Fellow Humans,

This is a week in which we need to be aware of our role as citizens of the world. Because of the recent human rights violations in Syria, the question of a U.S. military intervention is once more on the table. It is no longer enough to simply “oppose” or ignore any act of aggression without creating an alternative. Our global political system is based upon strategies that support consumerism. The tactics are those of domination and war as solution. Our planet is crying out for new answers.

I would like to ask you if you are willing to commit to what it would really take to create a real consciousness shift globally. Are you?

Marianne Williamson has started an organization called Sister Giant to combine Consciousness and Politics.  The Association for Global New Thought is organized to promote a global consciousness of peace and Oneness.  The Mayan Elders implored us to know the necessity of timely action toward peaceful solutions. Yet, the U.S. Government is operating on a model that creates war, not peace.

I would like to ask you all to reference one of the groups above, or to find people with whom you might study and learn and find ways to create models that show the world that we are one. Coming from an arts background, I believe in collaboration.  What are our models as a culture and as a country?

How can we become one world if we can’t work together?

Listening…

Let Us Pray…

With love,
Rev. Jane
